November 2023: Sutterton

St Mary’s Church, Sutterton showing the small round tower and you can just make out the steps up to a small door in the side of the square tower which provided access for the bell ringers – not an easy climb on a dark night in winter!

12 members of the Happy Wanderers Walking Group met at the Thatched Cottage at Sutterton. We took a short path towards Sutterton Church, unfortunately closed, where we looked at the architecture and discussed various aspects of the building. Of particular interest was the small round tower tucked into a corner of a side chapel. Climbing inside this little tower, and out through a door at the top led you to a small set of steps, at the top of which was another door. This was access to the bell tower!

From St Mary’s we walked to St Peter’s at Algakirk, where we were able to go inside to admire the tiles behind the altar. Taking a walk along back roads around the villages we arrived at the Thatched Cottage where lunch was enjoyed by all. Thanks to Heather Girdlestone for leading the ‘walk with interest’.
