Risk Assessment Form Spalding and District U3A Nature of Event : Stacking chairs and tables. Date Completed: 18/9/2024 Activity: Stacking chairs after activity in a hall or bringing piles of chairs out to set out the chairs. Also applies to fold up tables. Description of the hazard: In Surfleet village hall there are 2 models of chair, the same colour and if these are mixed then the stack of chairs becomes unbalanced and topples over. In Surfleet village hall there are fold up large and small tables, which are quite heavy and need to be lifted and balanced on to trolleys on their short edge. There is a risk of hands/arms being hit or trapped. Groups exposed to risk: Members helping to lay out the hall or clear up. Chairs have toppled over but no one has come to harm to date. One member was injured on their arm causing bruising when putting tables away, Likelihood of risk happening: (1-3) 3 Severity if the risk occurs: (1-3) 2 Overall score: 6 Substantial What controls are in place: When stacking chairs only certain members, who are aware of the risk of mixing the 2 models normally do this task. However on occasion another member might help without realising that there are 2 types of chair as they are both blue. Only members who are aware of the table stacking procedure ever do them. Signs are going to be printed to put on the door where the chairs are stored to remind members of the 2 models of chair and it will be pointed out at the meeting. The management of Surfleet village hall have been informed of the problem. Is any action required to further minimise risk: Signs will be put up at the November monthly meeting.
